Mr. Jan De La Bel, known in the community as “Jean-Jean” was born in Cap-Haitien, Haiti on December 6, 1957, at Justinien Hospital to Jacques Jean-Jacques (father) and Rose Fortuna (mother). He was the eldest child of five; Jeanne, Gertrude, Jose, and Jacquessaint. He lived a life filled with love, hard work, and dedication to his family. His educational background was rooted in the Adventist curriculum in his primary years in Port-Margot, and continued his secondary education in Port-au-Prince, where he learned “artisana” and entrepreneurship. The entrepreneurial spirit is part of Jean-Jean’s DNA, and he’s been creating businesses ever since his youth. He arrived in America in the 1980s, and toiled and persevered daily to become a successful businessman. He created a real estate and insurance company, and participated in many business ventures including WICs store, bakery, and auto sales that earned him the respect of the community.
In his community, Jean-Jean was regarded as a pillar of strength for all. He pioneered the way to America and brought his siblings and parents into America and was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need, regardless of his circumstances, making a lasting impact on those around him. He was vital in the development of his home church, Horeb SDA, and was instrumental in facilitating the procurement of their church.
At the age of 66, he passed away, leaving behind his wife Mirlande Orelus, four children Mighty J, Suzie Labelle, Danzinni, Dangelot, and one grandchild Ezekiel, who adored him. He was a devoted husband and father who always put his family first. He worked tirelessly to provide for his loved ones, instilling in them the values of respect for God, discipline, and perseverance.
As we bid farewell to Jean-Jean, let us cherish the memories of his wisdom, his love, his laughter, and his unwavering support. Though he may be gone, his legacy of love and dedication will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he rest in peace, knowing he was cherished and will never be forgotten.
