Yanick was born on September 30th, 1950 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, from parents Jean Elias Leger, her father, and mother Armelite Meuse. She grew up in Port-au-Prince with her younger brother Elias Leger and, having been orphaned at an early age by their mother’s death, later welcomed two more brothers, Dimitry and Steve.
Known in her closer circles by her nickname Nanoune, Yanick attended College George Mark in the 60’s in Port-au-Prince. She emigrated to the US in the early ‘70s and resided with her uncle George and wife Ghislaine in Brooklyn N.Y., where she attended New York City Community College. Her brother Tilou moved to the US and joined her at uncle George and Ghislaine’s residence. As a testimony to her selflessness, Tilou recalls how Nanoune went out of her way, while attending to her own work and school obligations, to make his transition to US college painless.
Yanick met Ernst 15 plus years ago, they had a very special relationship. He took good care of her; he was there through thick and thin, all the way until the end.
Thank you to her friends and those who were always there for her. Although God has decided to call you now, Nanoune, we will never forget you. Thank you for the great memories, your sisterly love and the friendship you gave us while you were with us. We are very lucky to have known you, lived with you and learned from you.
Goodbye, our dear Nanoune. We love you. We miss you already. Rest in peace. Love, always.
